Military Parade Blog

This weekend didn’t quite go as planned. I didn’t get much of my book read, so I will have to share that will you at a later date. Also, there are so many topics I want to cover, but this administration keeps feeding me lots and lots of topics and I keep telling myself that tomorrow is another day. I will write about the firing of Andrew McCabe right before he was able to retire with his full pension, which is a really crappy thing to do to someone who has put his life on the line to protect the people of this country, but I want to write about the $10 million to $30 million parade Trump wants to have on Veterans Day.

The U.S. Department of  Housing and Urban Development estimates there are 39,471 homeless veterans in the United States right now and in 2013 the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs released a study from 1999 to 2010 showing that roughly 22 veterans die by suicide every day. That is one veteran dying by their own hands every 65 minutes.

If our country has a surplus up to $30 million dollars, then why isn’t it being spent on our vets instead of a “military type” parade? The United States has victory parades after we win a war, but we have been in one war after another since 9/11. I do understand celebrating our military, but I think before we have a huge, wasteful parade we should take care of our vets first.

Think of the housing $30 million could buy for our veterans. Or how about helping our veterans get the help they need? Why are so many vets killing themselves? We need an answer and way to help them instead of a parade.

How about we take that $30 million and help the veterans who are unemployed? Vets could be retrained so they can be employed in technology. Technology is not going away and if we could retrain vets, we could help them with jobs, homelessness and give them the mental help they may need.

Here in my own corner of Texas, there is a homeless vet that I see when the weather is warm. He has his dog with him and he doesn’t want a handout, he wants a hand up. He is looking for a job so that he can provide for himself. It makes me sad and then angry when I see veterans in need and it seems that our government uses them up and spits them out to try to make it on their own without support.

In a memo from the Pentagon, “This parade will focus on the contributions of our veterans throughout the history of the U.S. military, starting from the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812 to today, with an emphasis on the price of freedom,” the memo reads. (LINK)

Yet, Veteran’s Affairs has not been involved in the planning. The parade will not have tanks but will have other wheeled vehicles. Tanks would do much damage to the infrastructure in Washington. The memo also says there will be “heavy” air component after the parade.

This does not sound like we will be celebrating our veterans, but it seems like it is a “show of power” by Donald Trump and he wants to be like the people he admires, such as Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong Un. He has also said he wouldn’t mind being in power like President Xi Jinping of China. This parade isn’t for our vets, it is for him.

This is what Donald Trump is looking for and it is not very American.

I think the parade money could be put to much better usage. It’s time for us to call the people who represent us. I will be calling today to make my voice be heard. This money needs to be spent on our veterans and not on a stupid parade.

Mawow and I wish you,

Peace, Love & Kitty Snuggles
