HATE IN AMERICA

Good Morning my Friends,

Today I am tackling a subject that is personal. It happened to me this week and I know I shouldn’t let other people get to me, but it was personal and they wanted me to hear them. At the gym the other day, I was lifting weights and the women on the arc machine behind me said, “with that hair, she must be dirty,” and the other woman chimed in with, “only sluts and whores have piercings and tattoo like her.” Keep in mind, I had headphones on and loud music going and I still heard them. So, how many other people heard them? Who from the gym takes one look at me and thinks I am dirty because I wear box braids? And, who freaking cares that I have my septum and both nostrils pierced? As for my tattoo, I got it on vacation last month and I got it for a very personal reason. It wasn’t a spur of the moment tattoo, this is something that I have wanted for years. Not that I have to justify my tattoos and piercings to anyone.

 Why is there so much hatred in the world today? I have heard when Americans travel outside of the country we tend to make asses of ourselves, I’m looking at you, Jake Paul. I am not sure what is happening to our country. When I was a teenager, I don’t remember people being so outright mean. I mean as a teenage girl, I had my fair share of fights with other girls and my sisters, but I don’t think we were cruel to each other. I don’t ever remember having hateful things said to me by strangers or friends. As I got older, the meaner people have become.

Has the price of being nice to one another become so high that people don’t even try anymore? Are there purely evil people in this world? Why is this happening?

I want to blame it all on Donald Trump, but I can’t. I really can’t. Does that surprise you? In order for this country to slide downhill so fast, the hatred and anger have had have been there all along. So, I guess I viewed my world with rose-colored glasses. Maybe I grew up an idyllic childhood where everyone treated everyone else with respect. I mean, I saw people not get along, but not like this. So all of this anger was festering and waiting to rear its ugly head. Wait, that’s wrong. I think what we are witnessing is the hatred that people of color and people who happen to not be white, gay, lesbian, trans, queer and other minorities have had to deal with their entire lives. It really sucks, but what a lesson for me and others to learn. It makes me so sad to think that friends of mine have been treated like they are lesser because of who they are and I am sure I have not had even a quarter of what my friends have been through.

How can people hate the way they do? Online it is miserable, but I have never heard people talk about me before. I have had looks because I like to have pink hair, I have worn pink hair way before it was considered normal and I have had my fair share of look and whispers, but never been called names.

What this has taught me is that things need to change in this country. I have hope that the younger generations will put an end to racism. What Donald Trump has done to cause even more hatred of minorities is to bring his blatant racism into the White House and normalize it. He is doing everything possible to make minorities and immigrants the blame for everything that is wrong in this country, but this country was made by minorities and immigrants. Unless you are Native American, your family came here from another country and I am betting most of our families came here with very little, were undocumented, and this country welcomed them with open arms. We need to get back to the place where immigrants are welcomed because immigrants are the fabric that holds this country together.

Sometimes it is hard to believe we are living in 2018. Donald Trump is trying to take us back to the 1950’s where segregation was still accepted. If you need proof, Trump is planning on rolling back Obama era guideline concerning affirmative action. He doesn’t believe that colleges should not consider race when considering admissions. (LINK)

Further proof, Donald Trump’s administration is attempting to deter people fleeing from other countries to seek asylum in this country by holding asylum seekers in jail until their case can be heard by a judge. (LINK) I do not understand how this is legal. They are also giving asylum seekers a choice of dropping their case and be deported with their children or they will be separated from their kids and will be deported without their children. How can they do this?

So what can we do to stop this? We need to make sure that Donald Trump is not elected again. We need to elect someone who is willing to be the president for 100% of the country and not just their followers. Donald Trump only plays to his base which is made of people who I am related too, white nationalist and downright mean people. We need to chase the white nationalist back into the darkness and let the people who are downright mean know that their hate is not welcome here.
